I recently bought an 1956 Oliver Super 55. It came with a shop manual but I can find no refrence to what kind of oil I should put in the transmission and differential. Please give me a hand.

I was told by the local parts store to use 80-90w, supposedly they called a mobile rep and he said that back years ago there wasnt oil thick enough and the oliver addative was used to make a light oil stand up to the heat and friction of a heavier oil. they said to definatly NOT to use transmision oil as it would burn up the transmision and final drive. So i use 80-90w, and have had no problems. So take it as u like, this info is from across the counter of an auto parts salesman

Chief , Years ago , motor oil did not have the additives in it, like todays oils. From what I understand , Oliver additives were to help prevent foaming of the oil.Foamy oil does not lubricate as well.Foamy oil also does not respond as well in a hydraulic system. Today , a lot of these additives are in the oil when you pull it off the shelf. That is why the average consumer does not have to add any.

I have a copy of the Shop Manual and this is kind of long, but this is what is says under the heading "LUBRICATION-TRANSMISSION, DIFFERENTIAL and FINAL DRIVE:
Beginning at tractor serial number 60 501-000, all tractors had SAE 5W-20 or 10W-30 engine oil and Oliver 102 082-A tranmission oil additive in the transmission, final drive, belt pulley and Power-Booster Drive reservoirs.
Multiple viscosity SAE 5W-20 or 10W-30 has a more constant lubricating ability at all temperatures, whereas SAE 90 and 140 is thick and does not circulate at low temperatures.

Everyone says something different. Anything from 30w to gear oil. I use 80w-90 in mine. I am in southern Indiana and it is a little stiff on a cold winters day until it runs awhile, but it hasn't given me any problems. I believe they had 30w with an additive that is no longer available from the factory, but I may be wrong on that one.
