hi my name is dustin, i began restoring an oc-46(the three cylinder) last year. whoever had it before my dad didn't take very good care of it. my father only used it a few hours before it broke down and he couldn't use it. well i had to pull the engine, and after having one cylinder sleeved, all new pistons, had the crank turned, new bearings, and a few other things, it now purrs like a kitten. (never heard a more beautiful sound)
anyway, there are a few things that still need a little work. so i have a few questions for ya. when we got the oliver, someone had disconnected the fuel line from the sediment bulb and had installed a fuel pump. bypassing the sediment bulb all together. now this is fine except that the fuel pump only runs one way off the battery. it has to have a negative ground, and as you know the oliver has a positive ground. does it matter if the battery is put in one way or the other? when we got the tractor the battery was a 12v and it was installed with the neg. as the ground. is it okay to run a 12v on this tractor? the tractor starts like i said and runs like a top, but i don't think it is charging the battery. because it will only start the tractor maybe five to ten times before i have to take the battery off and charge it again. the meter on the dash always goes to the positive side. when you turn the key on, it goes pos. and after you start it, it moves further pos. but then it doesn't go any further it just sort of shakes back and forth. i would like to know if the battery will charge with the neg. as the ground, or do i have to rewire the generator to charge the battery in the other direction? or should i look for a pump that runs off a pos. ground?
if this is not clearly stated please let me know.
oh and another question, we have a gear box down under the floor plate but some previous owner took off the shift stick and wired it in one position. is there a way to tell the difference between the travel reverse and the slo-lo?
thanks for listening and i look forward to your response.

With the battery hooked neg ground you are dischargeing the battery when it reads +. The regulator is usualy damaged when this reverse hook up is made. 12 volt systems sure spin alot faster I would go that way if you plan to use it alot. Add a 12 volt alternator, reverse wires on charge gauge, check for 12 volt coil, clean and replace fuel tank and screen+bowl, remove fuel pump if you want to.

hi larry, thanks for the response. everything clear except the "replace fuel tank and screen+bowl" do you mean replace the fuel tank or the parts of the sediment bulb? maybe i should ask if there was a fuel pump originally on it, or was it a gravity feed? do i need both fuel pump and sediment bulb hooked up? because this is not how it came although i would not be surprised if it was wrong like so many other things.
thanks again

The oc-46 had a fuel pump on the side of the motor however a lot of these were replaced with electric fuel pumps. If you do not have a fuel pump the crawler will run but you will lose a lot of the power and high speed at load. You can use the sediment bulb or put in an in line fuel filter. Good luck Spark.
