Before I take a long walk on a short pier, HELP ME!!! A friend has an Oliver 1850 gas. When it gets hot, it starts to skip and will quit. I have changed the following: coil, plugs, distributor, fuel filter (emptied the tank and flushed), carb overhaul, plug wires. This thing runs like a ear until the temp needle runs in the wokr zone for a while, then the problem starts. We took off the side panels, and put a shield on the gas line too. What on earth is going on?

Thanks in advance. Bud

my dad had the same problem for years. he tried everything listed above and more! finally had a custom set of fuel tanks made to go between the fenders and the tires.when it starts to "vapor lock" he turns off the valve on the main tank and uses the cooler gas from the fender tanks. hope this helps.

Bud, you didn't say if you can restart the engine immediately or if you have to wait until it cools but here are some thoughts:

If you can restart it immediately, the next time it starts to sputter, remove the gas cap right away. If it continues to run, the problem is lack of venting in the gas cap.

If you have to let the engine cool before it will restart, first verify that you have the right ignition coil. The wrong type, even if new, can cause this problem. Also check the ignition condenser, same deal. The last thing I can think of is you may have a warped intake manifold and/or bad manifold gasket. As the engine warms up, the manifold moves around enough to cause a vacuum leak. You can check the manifold and head mating surfaces with a metal straightedge, if everything looks O.K. then at least put it back together with a new gasket and torque bolts to spec.

Good luck!

I went through something similar afew years back with our 1650gas tractor, almost drove me out of my mind. Our problem turned out to be a small peice of aleaf had gotten stuck were the fuel enters the sediment bowl, when you took the bowl off to check it gas was cmming through but apparently not quite enough when you started working the engine.might be worth checking that on your 1850 good luck!
