I have a 1969 1850 diesel that seems to like to sieze 1st/3rd gear to the sleeve it rides on.
Since my family has owned the tractor about 23 years it has done this a total of three times. The transmission lube pressure runs about 11 psi.And it gives no warning when it does it.
A neighbor had an 1850 make a squeeling noise when in 6th gear a while back and it to was siezing 1st/3rd gear. Ours just locks up.No noise
Is there a fix for this problem? Is it common for this tractor.Mine is tore down any suggestions before putting back together.

Thank you ahead of time.
Tim

Tim, it's been awhile since I've had one of those apart, but I seem to remember there were holes for the lube in the sleeve and the pinion shaft. These holes may need to be lined up for proper oil flow. If there are holes, make sure all the passages are open. Like I said I may be all wet but it seems like there are holes to line up. Good luck, WB.

I would first check your entire linkage to the shifting forks. Ensure there is no looseness in the shifting rails and forks and if all looks good, then begin to suspect the shifting collar. The teeth may be worn/notched to cause the collar to want to stick. If this is the case, replacement of the collar and/or the affected gear should take care of it. Don't know of any 1850s with this problem. These tractors did have a batch of bad bull gears during production, but otherwise no widespread problems of which I am aware. Good Luck.
