Problem : Have notice that tractor will be going along just fine then justs slows down and will speed up again. This just started recently and need to know how to correct it Would appreciate any help. Thanks

The governor to carb linkage may be sticking - will cause exactly what you describe. With the motor off and the governor set at idle, the linkage should move very freely - should almost feel loose. If not, oil the pivot points and make sure the linkage rod is not rubbing on something.

A bent carb throttle shaft can also cause sticking - though that should only show up immediately after a carb rebuild.

The engine runs alright , I think it is more in the transmission part that makes the tractor speed up and slow down. Though the information on the carburetors was probably my trouble when I first bought the tractor, thanks for answering me.

If you can think of any reason the transmission would be doing this let me know and thanks

Stanley - What transmission set-up does your 1600 have - straight clutch, Hydrapower or Reverse-o-Torque?

If your 1600 has the Hydra-Power Drive, this is probably what you are feeling. In Hydra-Power range, the tractor is allowed to free-wheel at speeds in excess of the gear ratio it is presently in. An overrunning clutch allows this to happen. In moderate to hilly terrain, this can pose a problem. This is most likely the case with your tractor unless the transmission is cutting out while going uphill. In that case, I might suspect a warped and/or oily clutch disc and/or weak pressure plate springs.

Next time it happens, immediately remove the gas cap. If the engine picks up speed, you've found the problem. In my case, the original gas cap gasket had deteriorated to the point where parts of it clogged the two small holes in the cap that are the gas tank vent. A new gasket and a few squirts of carb cleaner and I was back in business.
