It doesn't look like the air cleaner in my manual!

I bought an Oliver 1550 (1964). My manual shows an air cleaner cartridge that is found just above my distributer. The cartridge can be removed and cleaned or replaced. My tractor, on the other hand, appears to have an oil resevoir air cleaner, mounted upright through the hood on the left side of the motor. I pulled the resevoir pan, and found about 1/2 inch of gunk at the bottom. I cleaned that and replaced the oil, but the steel wire screens above the pan don't appear to be removable. Can I pull that and clean it as well? If so, how? I'm concerned that there may have been some neglect there, and want to see how far the filth goes. Please e-mail me with your opinion. Thanks.

Sounds like a 1600 air cleaner. Do not remove wire flush out with gas and use.

That 1/2" of dirt in the bottom is the air cleaner doing it's job. I wouldn't be concerned about the wire mesh, the air goes through that after it goes through the oil. Evidently the older models still had the oilbath air-cleaner and not the paper filter type that your manual shows. Good Luck, WB.
