Oliver with Detroit engine?

I recall a neighbor farmer (maybe 25 years ago) with an Oliver tractor that had an engine that would "scream" like a Detroit Diesel. It could be heared for quite a distance. Did Oliver use Detroits? If so, which model of Oliver and which model Detroit. Thanks and Happy New Year.

We have an Oliver 1900 with a 4-53 Detroit motor that turns 2850 rpm and with a straight exhaust it makes a lot of noise. We pull it at the local farm stock shows.We weigh in at 9500lbs and 10500 lbs.

olivers used detroits in the super 99. the motor was a 3-71 detroit diesel.

when i was just big enough to be useful we were still running a Super99....a 3-71 turned up to adjust for the red clay in VA this tractor probably did more to damage my hearing than any of the turbo behemoths since! in any case an 1855 turbo we are currently using comes in a close second thanks in part to the straight pipes. =)

Oliver offered the Detroit Diesel 3-71 as an option in the Super 99 and standard in the 990, 995 and the Massey 98 which was a relabeled 990 Oliver. Oliver used the 4-53 in the 1900 and 1950. These were also sold as the same model number Cockshutts. The 4-53's ran at 2200-2400 RPM and were the real screamers compared to the 1600-1800 RPM for the Super 99, 990, 995 and MF98.

We had a neighbor who ran an Oliver 1950(?) equipped with a GM 4-53 diesel in the early '70's. You could hear it howling 3 miles away - especially at night!

Oliver used the 3-71 first then included a 4-71 in their newer models these tractors were also purchased and resold under other manufactures labels. With 2 stroke design and a roots style blower these machines will really scream. The last one I heard was at a recent pull, The owner had completly restored a MF resell unit to look absolutely gorgeous, it was like a hot rod. He had the 3-71 professionally built and had 3 equal length exhaust stacks bolonga cut in polished stainless sticking stight up like a organ about 2 or 3 feet.. Two others had already pulled and I was sitting on the line they had a 3 and a4-71 and really sounded great. but when that MF hitched it was murder. We were outside but it was louder than any indoor pull I'd ever been to it made my eyes water it was so loud. Unfortunately his weight wasn't right yet so he lost but he definetly had the most engine of them all and it will only be a matter of time before he gets it. I'll be sure to get way back when he turns up that pump next time though.
