I just purchased a 550 forklift and I can find only one forward gear after it was unloaded do the shifting forks get worn and how do I correct the problem? The machine needs some TLC but it runs good and should be able to pick up those little HG crawlers. Thanks Spark

The shift forks can break off this alows half to fall into bottem of trans and rub against gears.Aufull noise. When this happens you lose 2gears in each range a total of 4. 6-4=2which is what you have. Remove hyd unit or (cover )in your case and weld the fork togather.

The forks must hold shift collers corretly or they will bind. Before bolting down top make sure they shift easily. IT took me three trys to get corect.

Spark-

I have a 1962 551 forklift and it has the standard 6/2 transmission. I think that I have heard that some has a shuttle type shift similar to that found on backhoes. Could yours be one of those?

Your 550 forklift has a lifting capacity of 2 tons.
