How Accurate is the speedometer?

I got a Oliver 2255 with 18.4 x 38 rear tires. The speedometer and cable are in good condition (needle doesn't jump around). I am wondering how accurate it is. I shouldn't have too much slippage for I'm doing, and for what the tractor weighs. I am going to do some preemerge and postemerge spraying with it and don't really want to be way off on the chemical rates because the speedometer is of by 2-4 m.p.h.

Any help will be appreciated.

Mike, An easy calulation for speed of a tractor: walk beside moving tractor for twenty seconds while counting a good 3ft pace. Then move a decimal point up one spot to get speed 20 paces in 20 seconds would be 2.0 mph 18 paces would be 1.8 If you have to walk faster try counting the paces of one leg then double then same calculation

The speedometer on my 1955 is pretty accurate. I plant with this tractor and the radar speed on the monitor and the speedometer are pretty close. The best thing to do is as Aaron said, figure your true ground speed by marking off a course and timing how long it takes to drive it.

You have 2 options that would really inprove your accuracy. You an buy some kind of more accurate speedometer. We bought a radar system for our sprayer tractor. Think it was around $400 or so. You could also get a simple magnetic one, with a magnet on the front wheel and a display that shows actaul mph. I think those are around $300 or so. Option "B" is to just calibrate your tractor. Your extension agency should be able to help, as well as most sprayer parts catalogs have the infomation. You basically measure off a known distance and time the tractor driving at spraying speed through it. Do the math with the distance and time to get miles per hour. I don't have the formulas off hand, but I can find them for you and let you know.
