Engine temp

The temp gauge in my oliver OC-3 was busted, got a different one and discovered that the enigine was runing at 210 degrees F! I took out the thermostat and that brought the temp down to 140 F, so I assumed that the thermostat was not opening correctly. I bought a new thermostat (I had to temp choices--165 or 180, and I chose the 165) installed it and now the engine reads 190 idling and 200 when I load it down, although it cools back down in a matter of 30 seconds.

Any ideas as to what's going on here? The manual says the operating temp is 170. I know the radiator is good becuase I just had it rodded out and the fan belt is tight. Should I expereiment with drillling a extra hoe in the themostat to improve water flow? I don't ewant to take it out entirely 'cause then the temp would be unregulated.

Any suggestions will be appreciated.

I don't think you have a problem. It's been my experience temp gages often are in error by 10 to 20 degrees, occasionally more. You may simply have a high reading gage.

Figure as long as it's not blowing off steam, and the motor doesn't knock, it's probably cooling just fine. I'd avoid drilling the 'stat or running without one - a cold engine wears out a lot quicker than one running at design temp.
