It seems like I have stirred up a hornet's nest. I have received a remarkable amount of support from many of you since my last posting and for that I thank you all. You are the only reason that I keep doing this. Prior to that posting I looked back and saw hardly anything but negative comments. It hit me the wrong way and I reacted out of rage when I should have just turned off the computer. But I cleared the air, received more support in one week than I have in a year and I was once again motivated. I went right to work and will finish up another 48 page issue of the magazine tonight. It's the March/April issue and you will receive it in April. I went to bed last night, took my laptop computer with me and wrote a story for the May/June issue. So I'm already working on the next one. I'm doing all that I can with 5 or 6 hours of sleep a night to get this back on track for the members. However, I have also infuriated the board of directors. They feel that I owe them an apology for saying that I get no help from the board. I will apologize to them but will stand by what I said. The majority of the board members are VERY SUPPORTIVE. They will call to express their support, but that is far as it goes. Since only 2 of the board members even own a computer, there's not much they CAN do to help with the magazine. I'm not condoning them for this, but it is the truth. If I was to call anyone of them and ask them to lay out a couple pages for me, they couldn't do it. If I need to fax a letter to them so they can answer a question about a tractor built in 1932, 30 years before I was even born....I can't do it. Only one of the board members has a fax that I know of. There just isn't much they can do to help me with the magazine. If we had known how outraged the members were, a letter or postcard should have been sent to ALL of them letting them know the status of the magazine or the club. But that is something that the board could have done without my assistance so that I could have kept working on the magazine. A newsletter was eventually sent out, but I'm the one that had to stop and do that, which put the magazine even further behind. I guess what infuriated me the most was the fact that there were circumstances which arose after the publication got to the printer which prevented it from being mailed for 2 weeks with the last 2 mailings. My hands are tied at that point but yet I still get the blame for it. The board only enforces that idea when they stand up in front of the members in attendance at Waterloo and apologize for my tardiness with the magazine. IT'S NOT ALL MY FAULT. Fortunately I have strong shoulders and will continue to bear the load. Maybe I'm taking it a little too personally, but this isn't just a magazine I'm editing. It's part of me. I've built it up over the last six years and would like to continue to do so. I had big plans for it in the next year (including color pictures) but I don't know if I'll get the chance to carry them out since I understand that my job is on the line. I'm sorry if the board was offended...Maybe we all needed a little wake up call. I rarely go this site due to lack of time. I've probably lost 2 hours tonight that I should have been working on the magazine. Hopefully this will calm some of the fury though and let you know that the HPOCA is still around. In the future...if you have concerns...please e-mail me. I'm in the book. :) Thanks again for all the nice letters. Now let's put all of this behind us and get back to the fun stuff. Sherry

I think it is only proper to pose the following questions to Sherry and await her response:

A) One might get the impression that you edit the magazine solely for pleasure. Could you please advise how much the club pays you for each completed issue?

B) Given the time to produce the November - December issue, could you explain why it was reduced from the customary 40 pages to 32 and the only feature was Bob's Tales?

C) Could you explain in detail what your relationship was to the HPOCA web page designer and why the club can not gain control of the page?

D) Why were the usual full page advertisers (ie Farmersville Equipment, Maibach Tractor, Aumann Auctions, etc.) absent from the November - December issue? Has the delay in printing their ads with time sensitive data caused them to cease advertising?

Dear "Friend of the Board." While I don't "have a dog in this fight," as the saying goes, I think it's only fair that you identify yourself when getting in someone's face. Of course, the editor gets paid for publishing the HPOCA magazine. It's obvious that the "Board" agreed at some point that Sherry would put out the magazine, and be paid for her efforts, which is only right. If the board feels that the editor isn't doing the job they're paying her for, they should deal with her. Certainly, an anonymous "Friend of the Board," should not be their spokesman, nor should the problem be hashed out on a forum such as this.
By the same token, Sherry should have aired her frustration with the board to them personally, and not on this forum.

Just another vote of confidence.
My grandfather owned an OC 3. I have an old black and white photo of it sitting in front of me. My father owns an OC 3. Its sitting outside the window. My father is an HPOCA member. The whole family looks forward to the magazine. Keep up the great work.

Sherry, There is no need to apologize to anyone. If the truth hurts then a little pain is necessary.

I'd hate to see what type of magazine the HPOCA would have without you Sherry. I feel you produce an outstanding magazine for the membership. I think the Board should look at how much you have improved the quality over what we had just a few years back.

Sounds like the whole organization needs to settle down and do a little evaluation and reflection on what kind of expectations there are for each position. Just curious, what kind of software do you use to put the magazine together with? I enjoy the magazine when I do get it. Maybe the Club should charge us more to get some help for you. What's the circulation number for the magazine? ..... .

The magazine is put together with WordPerfect, but I'm starting to use Quark. There are appoximately 5500 active members.

Sherry, I am a new member of the "club" I think there are very few "clubs" that are fortunate enough to have a magazine/newsletter such as the one that you put together. after all this is an informal club and you are putting out a excellent product. money doesn't buy "heart and soul". I work on the road (300 days a year) and your magazine and this web site have provided countless hours of enjoyment.
