About a month ago I posted a message about how hard my 77 is to start and you told me to check the energy cells in the head. Where are the energy cells located on the head and how do you get to them? How do I make a puller to get them out and how do I clean them? Thanks

Ok on the side of the engine that does not have the injection pump.On the diesel head you will see six pipe plugs evenly spaced down the side in a line.Remove the plug and right behind it is a cap that has a point on it,grab the point with needle nose pliers and remove.Than take a o-ring remover or a scribe and try and feel out some threads in the energy cell, clean these out(try not to poke in middle wouldnt want to push carbon into engine)I usually go in a circle around the inside of the cell. Now for the puller ,what I have is home made with what I had laying around the shop.I started with a piece of steel 2.5 wide by 7"long at 1" thick.I drilled and threaded two 5/8 holes(at 3.5" centers from each other)Than in the middle of these two I drilled a 3/4" hole and reamed it out just a touch do not thread this hole.In this spot I use a 3/4" socket head fine thread bolt. The two 5/8 bolts by the way look like the bolt from a gear puller, square head and no threads at the bottom(this way threads cant get hurt)But I bet you could use two 1/2 grade 8 bolts and double nut the ends too.To clean I use diesel fuel over night and brake cleaner.Hope this helps.
