I have a 1972 1855 oliver that seems to have air in the hydraulics, and I can't get it out. I'm not sure if it's air or not. Whenever I use the hydraulics they stutter and jerk pretty bad. It seems to get better after you run it for a while.Any help would be very helpful!! Thanks

If memory is correct the 1972 production tractors had a belt driven cooler pump. The problem was that the belt was ran too tight and it caused the drive shaft bushing to wear and air would get in between the seal and shaft (the pump pulled a small amount of oil off the top of the filter and should take any air along with the oil). To check it insert a piece of clear platic hose in the line on the return side of the cooler. The oil flows by gravity from the resevoir to filter to pump. If air is present check all of the "o-rings" etc. shadetree is correct in adjusting the screw on the remote valve, however it will only control the flow from the base of the cylinder(your cylinder should extend when the lever is pulled to the rear). You have to turn the screw in at least three turns before it makes andy difference.

Joe it sounds like you need to slow down the flow of oil to the remote valves. I believe that there is a restrictor valve you can set from the back of the tractor. Follow the hoses up to the valve bodys and look for a screw with a jam nut locking it in place on each vave body. Loosen the jam nut and turn the screw in a little at a time until your hydralics slow down and smooth out. Also it may be a good idea to have your local Oliver dealer check the hydralic system for flow and pressure settings. Good Luck Shadetree.
