Oliver 70 (idle RPM to high)

I just completed rebulding the engine in my 1947 Oliver 70 but I am having trouble keeping the RPMs low even when the carburator is shut all the way down. At first I thought the problem was the govenors but now I suspect the carb even though its been rebuilt. Suggestions???

Troy , like Dick says , unhook the governor linkage and try to idle it down.You may have the butterfly in backwards , or if the governor linkage has been broke off in the past , it may be to sort.You may be able to reajust the linkage.How did the tractor idle down before you rebuilt the engine?Did you buy the tractor"not running" , knowing that it needed rebuilding?If so , you might want to look at the linkage.If the tractor did run and idle down before you rebuilt it , you might want to look at the butterfly in the carburator.One more thing.Does the governor work OK? Years ago , one of my Oliver"70" tractors use to go through fly ball bearings.The fly ball bearing is located inside the governor housing.If that bearing goes bad , the governor would not work right.You would be able to tell by pulling the thottle lever all the way down.If the engine screems like it is going to blow up , the flyball bearing is bad. If you unhook the govener linkage and can't ajust the stop screw to slow it down you will have to take the carb off and make sure that the butterfly is closeing completly off. If it don,t close the butterfly was probably installed backwards. The butterfly acts as a plug and stops the vacuum from drawing gas into the engine. That is the way the stop screw adjustment sets your idle. If it allows the butterfly to close to far the engine dies.

Scott and Dick,

Thanks for the comments guys. I will have to check on the butterfly being installed backwards, that could be a possibility. I had the carburator rebuilt about 6 months ago at a White/Oliver dealer in Ohio and they replaced all the worn parts, at least it looks like they did. All linkage has been disconnected from the throttle and govenor and adjustments have been made by hand, but even with the butterfly adjusted to the point of completely shutting off the vaccuum and engine runs to fast until the butterfly seats. When I reach this point there is sometimes gas that pours out of the air intake side of the carb. I have re-adjusted the float and it seemed to help a little. Is the jet letting to much gas through?

I appreciate the advise and any help you and Scott can and have given me. The tractor has been in the family since 1973 and I have been working on it since the early 90s. The original tractor was last ran in 1980 but the engine that I am using is out of a 70 that last ran in '89. The carburator that I had rebuilt is also from this same engine. Cuurently my wife Kari and I are living in Conneticut but the tractor is located in Northern Missouri. We're going back to visit next week and I was hoping to solve this carb problem so I can put the old girl back in service. Thanks agian.
