My brother just bought an Oliver "1650" tractor last fall.Everything worked fine. The tractor has been sitting in the barn , not being used until now.He just called me , asking a question I don't know.Maybe some one can help.Apparently he has the tractor out of the barn now.He started the tractor. From what he said , the tractor turns to the left very good. The problem is:he can not turn it back to the right.Could anyone tell me what the problem is?He also needs to know what kind of fluid to put in the power steering , and wear to put it in.His tractor has the OVER/UNDER transmission in it.I was told this was in the newer 1650 tractors. It is also a diesel.I don't know if this helps any.I told him when he first bought the tractor , he should buy books for it.Apparently he hasn't done that yet. Scott

Scott there are 2 types of power steering hydramotors that are used on the Oliver 1650s(the hydramotor is the piece at the bottom of the steering wheel shaft under the dash) One is a kind of round looking thing about the size of a volley ball. The other one is a small square thing about 4 inches across with 4 hydraulic lines going out of it. If either one of these things turns out to be the problem you should have a qualified mechanic take care of this problem. The old style round looking one is no longer used and has to be replaced with a new charlin kit which is the small square looking one. And it is problably expensive but will take care of the problem. If your tractor turns easy one way then that would lead me to beleive that you have good hydralic pressure to the hydramotor and it in turn is able to direct the oil flow to one side of the steering system. For what ever reason it is not able to open a valve to let the oil flow to the other side of the system. Also you can no longer get saganaw steering parts for the round motor. The small charlin pump is serviceable but needs to be done by somebody that knows how to overhaul one because you can get seriously hurt doing it yourself unless you have done one of these before. From personal exprrience I know that if it is not timed properly after you start the tractor and you first move the steering wheel the wheel will rip out of your grip and go absolutely wild spinning out of control from one direcrtion to the other and could easily break some bones. Before I forget the power steering is powered from the hydraulic system and uses a 10wt nondetergent hydraulic oil, Agco White calls this oil type 55 oil. The whole system only takes 5 gallons. I hope this answers some of your questions. Good Luck Shadetree.

I talked to my brother.I told him what you said.I think you hit this one on the money. He can turn the wheels all the way to the right when the tractor is not running. When he starts the engine , the steering wheel flys out of control----turning all the way back to the left.He says that he could not even hold on to it.

Scott ask your brother to remove the top dash cover there are 2 screws at the back edge of the hood and 2 more right in front of you as you are seated, pull the cover off and look down inside to see what shape the hydramotor is. Please let me know is this thing a small square block or the larger kind of round shaped looking thing. This should be at the bottom of the steering wheel shaft. Some of these tractors have already had the updated small 4 inch blocky style motor on them and they are repairable. Again please do not attempt to repair this your self because of the power these things have. Good Luck and be careful Shadetree.

Scott, in your original post you said "he has got it out of the barn now and started it up,now the steering only turns to the left". Did he pull the tractor out of the barn with another tractor or something,or pull it to get it started? If so and he had to use force on the steering wheel to turn the tractor without it running, the centering springs inside the steering motor may be damaged. This would not let the valves return to neutral, causing loss of power to one direction and possible "motoring" of the steering wheel. Just something that crossed my mind after reading your posts. Good Luck, Wrenchbender.

I don't like giving this bad news to my brother , but at least we can point him in the right direction. He may even buy a book on the tractor. Thanks Again , Scott Green
