I have a 1957 Olive OC4 gas crawler. Great machine. I would like to remove the generator and 6 volt battery and install a self exciting or 1 wire Delco alternator and a 12 volt battery. Is this a straight out trade generator for alternator and 6 volt for 12 volt? What about the positive ground? I know they make a positive ground alternator. I have no accessories so all this alternator will be doing is charging the battery. Can anyone recommend a company and/or model to purchase for this project? It needs to excite or start charging at a low rpm. Full load rpm is 1700. Will the starter survive 12 volt jolt or does that need replaced too? The old 6 volt is just not cutting it. I have actually installed an 8 volt battery with great success, but when they die, it's hard to find a replacement. Anyone know where to get 8 volt starter batteries? I could do an 8 volt with an alternator set to charge at that and then the starter would better survive. Anyway, I would appreciate any idea or experience anyone has.

Thanks.

Darryn

Well first off the 1 wire is not the way to go. Most take 2000 plus rpm to kick in. As far as + ground yes you can find alternators that are + ground but you have to get one from england to do so. I would sue a good old 10SI delco alternator one for say a 1980 Chev pick up with no power any thing. The can be had for around $40 give or take a few and are easy to wire up and will start charging from the get go. But they are - ground only

Transpo (GOOGLE it) sells regulators and rectifiers to make any "flavor" of delco-style alternator you want... 6-12-24-Volt, (+) or (-) ground. NO big deal, IF you really want to keep (+) ground. A local auto electrical shop will have access to the parts and or build yup whatever alternator you need.
