Hello,
I am putting on a new ball joint linkage on my Super 55 diesel. The tractor had an altered linkage, so I don't know what the original part should look like. Oliver part # 1E 888. I received one from O'Briens, and I am not sure it is the correct part. It has two threaded piceces on each end that connect to the Governor Control Bell Crank and the other end to the control rod. The control rod has a hole on the lower end that I would assume the ball joint link is attched to. Is this hole suppose to be threaded? The threads on my ball joint linkage are not long enough to go through the control rod. That's what makes me think they should be threaded. Also, the part I recieved has a bend in it, but the picture of the ball joint linkage in the parts book looks stright, but the image is small so it might not show the bend well. If someone can clear this up it would help me get this tractor going. Thanks.

The control rod is threaded, but 1/4", the threaded ends of the ball joint are smaller, #10.

In the early 60's changes were made to the governor linkage for those tractors. There are also links with 2 different part numbers. I have to baby sit today. I will try to check on it for you tomorrow if no one else answers. Don't forget to honor your mothers tomorrow. J.

John,
I happened to see a picture in the Super 55 owners manual (fig. 1-2) and the link looks very different from the one I received from O'Brien County Implements.

I have had the same problem on my 550. The sleeve on the governor control arm should be threaded to take the thread of your linkage. Either Oliver made changes at some stage or someone has drilled your arm out, removing the threads.

So I would suggest taking a small angle grinder to the nut side of that hole on the governor arm, and burr out a flat area - just enough to get a nut on there. Mine still comes off, from time to time, with all the back and forth movement.

Oh, I forgot to say, mine has an angle in it under the ball socket of that threaded bolt - but only at one end. The other end is on a right angle.
