I was field cultivating a 10 acre field to prepare it for alfalfa planting and was having no issues with steering, it was responsive and free. However, when I returned to the field with the drill the 1800 steered like a Log Boat. The steering felt as if something was restricting the flow of oil and the Hydraulic oil is full. What could be the possible causes of this?

Jim

Larry from Maryland's advice is good in that the spool valve in the flow divider is probably in the open position.  To check it, with the engine running, move one of the hydraulic levers to a work position and hold it while attempting to turn the steering wheel.  If it works under these conditions, the valve is open.  The most like situation is that the valve is stuck against the spring.  Take it apart and clean it out, if you have a drill press that will accomidate the valve, turn it and use a brown paper bag against the valve to polish.

I removed both springs in the Flow Diverter today and luckily both were not broken. I removed the spool and buffed it with brown paper and reinstalled it. Now the power steering is like is was before. Hopefuly this won't happen again.

Thanks for the suggestions. Now I am off to plant another pasture and pack two other.

Jim
