Now the 1550 diesel won't start. It had been giving me trouble all winter. Had to put charger on it to start it. Other day all I could get it to do is growl a little. Cleaned all the battery cable connections. That didn't help. Took starter off thinking it might be going bad. Hooked juice to it and the solenoid kicked and the motor spun freely. Must be batteries. It has the two big 6 volts under the floor. Whoever put them in didn't date them. Since we have had it for 20 years it must have been us. I know batteries can get so bad putting the charger on won't even make it turn over. Not real thrilled about spending the money so I want to get it right the first time.

Charge your batteries and then take a hydrometer and check the specific gravity in each cell and compare the readings. Should read 1.250 or better. Hal
PS: If any readings are 1.100 discard the batteries and get new ones.

Take the alternator off and get it tested to see if it is charging. You may just have to replace the batteries because the way it sounds the batteries are died.

I think the alt is charging. I just figure batteries are done for. Batteries just don't seem to last in this stuff near as long as I think they should. Of course I think everything should last forever.

along with bad batteries the cables could be bad. If they are original or have had clamp on ends added then replace them with good cablez with soldered ends

They all have clamp on ends. I took them all apart and cleaned them. Dad always complained that those were a temporary fix but he is the one who put these on and left them. I always made nice ones for myself when I worked at the implement dealer. A lot harder now since I have to pay full price instead of dealer cost:)

I think I am going to get the batteries out and find that they are Crown batteries. I sold those when I worked for R&J Oliver and I left there in 1995. If that's the case would say they are due.
