We bought our Oliver 1800 C with the intention of using it only for our haying operation. With our recent relocation to Indiana we will be expanding into some small scale crop and custom farming for our Amish neighbors. We need to use the 1800 until we can justify an upgrade to a larger tractor. To start looking for equipment I need to have a general idea of how large the equipment we can use. I know it is a "5 plow" tractor, but need some help. Our soils are clay-loam.

Jim I try to pull 5x14 3 point plow with trailing wheel and depth wheel. It is ALL it can do to pull it. My disk is a 13' kewanee with new disk blades. I can pull it too fast and ridge the soil, have to be careful. I had new rear tires put on it 2 years ago and had the fluid left out. That was a big mistake and I will have it put back in as soon as I can get it back to town. I pull a New Holland big round baler and it handles it fine. I have to watch the fluid level in the hydrapower, it gets low, but there are no external signs of oil leakage. I find the hyd to be very primitave, almost disgusting. Replaced the hyd pump when that went out but still they are not as good as the AC dad had.

Really rather see you hang iron on it than put fluid back in and risk a leak and ruin a rim. You can always take it off if you don't need it. Just my 2 cents.

You can only blame yourself for ruining a rim unless you bought it that way. When a stem goes bad, replace it right away and you won't have any problems. If you puncture a tire, fix it right away. When the tire guy fixes ours from a puncture, he always washes off the rim.

The original rims on the 1600 looked just fine when the tires were replaced 40 years later.

The thing about that is I am always the one aquiring a tractor after someone let it leak and ruin the rim. I know nobody ever though about us idiots trying to restore/work with this stuff 40+ years later but it is d@mn frustrating.

I'll agree with you there. My brother is working on his 550 yet, which I don't think had seen a grease gun in the last 20 years.

The rims were rotted out on the back, so instead of being able to run the old tires for a while, he's replacing the 24" rims with 28's right away and putting all new rubber all the way around.

His ultimate goal was to have it running by the 1st, but with what he found in the rear end he just got the parts on Friday. He hopes to have it sealed up in another week or so.

I used to know some Amish brothers here in Indiana when I was in high school. The family had a 3020 tractor that they used for their hogs, but didn"t use it in the field. They had a real nice early 90"s Chevy 2500 also. They were borderline Amish I guess, and they were real hard workers. The Amish around here all seem to do alright financially farming 50-100 acres. Where are you at?
