I opened the box from Hy-Capacity and the new HD clutch is much different from the OEM. How can these "HD clutches" work when they have only six small pads per side while the OEM parts are completely covered in pad? I always thought that more material meant more contact = less slippage.

Dave,
Glad to hear you are using Hy-Capacity clutches. I"ve always had real good luck with them. I hope you got a pressure plate from them also. If you did, you should have gotten 6 small washers tied to the pressure plate with a piece of wire. You use these on the bolts between the pressure plate and flywheel only if you have a flat faced flywheel. It sounds like you do. The flywheel with the step machined into it (.125) doesn"t use the washers. Back to your question, the material is much harder on the 6 pad clutch disk. Harder on the flywheel also.

Thanks for the info on the washers, it was not clear from the packaging just were the washers go. There is a note in the package that mentions .125 in clearance but not diagrams to help. I am sure my flywheel will have the flat face. I have just started pulling the engine but we have had a nasty turn in the weather that is slowing me down. It was 24C (75F) last weekend and now the high today is -10C (10F). Chores take a little longer using the truck and my homemade bale handler.

STOP...There are 2 styles of clutches used on the
1850. The disc fiber and button clutch plate. Each one requires a different pressure plate and
amount of flywheel step adjustment when grinding
the flywheel.
