My thoughts on the new Oliver Co.

I've been reading the posts the last couple of days and thought I'd put my 2 cents in. First is KISS, "keep it simple son",Common parts between all tractors. Two tractor lines,Utility and Medium Duty Row Crop,the two types of tractors that get alot of use and hours of service.My idea for the row crops is this,we all want the styling of the "55" series,so instead of building new tractors,buy old 55's and renew them. Cummins 5.9 power,better radiator & hyd. coolers,reliable O/U shift,and closed center hyd..Castings don't wear out unless they're damaged,all new high wear items,such as,bearings,steering parts,drive line couplers,rubber lines,electrical parts,ect. "Born Again Olivers".We'd have to tool up for the Utilities,Heavy "Bathtub" frame,syncronized trans,maybe a two or three speed shift,4 cyl. "B" series Cummins,and closed center hyd.,styled to match "Big Brother". Sounds like there are plenty of investors for capital,the only problems I see are the "L"'s,Labor,Liability,and Lawyers! Count me in!!! Any of you going to the Louisville Farm Show, maybe we can get together and talk? Just food for thought>

When and exactly where is the Louisville Farm Show? Will there be a tractor show as part of it?

Now your thinking, We know the weak points of the 55 series. Wouldent be to hard to fix them and sell as remanufactured. Start it out as a remanufacturing company. "Send us your tractor and well reman it better than new." Hire a couple of good mecanics and a good machene shop. A engeneer to draw up all needed modifications. When your not building tractors the employees can be making parts for existing olivers and some that agco does not carry and upgrade kits for the existing tractors? Just thinking out loud.

YES! You've hit on something there--like 'N Complete' does with the little Ford N series tractors. '55s are a dime-a-dozen, due to the 310s in them. Recycling them only makes sense! And they would be 'new' tractors, with the Cummins repower, and all new wearing parts, so they could be called 60 series. Line up dealers just like the 'N Complete' boys--you would have to agree to round up rebuilders and castings for them to get your dealership franchise. That keeps the 'new' tractor flow going smoothly. Farm out contracts for parts that are not still available from White, thus keeping costs such as factory space, tooling, equipment, utilities, insurance, and Workman's Comp, among others, down, while still generating employment.

The only problem I see is still being able to call them 'Olivers'--as they would be substantially changed, due to the different engine, they would no longer be completely as original, and therefore open to debate as to their lineage. That could be a real legal wrangle.

Maybe a new utility series would be alright, but I really don't think the little 550's need any updating to get the kind of jobs done that would be asked of them, so try to get the tooling(if it still exsists) and just turn 'em out again.

You stated that "55s are a dime-a-dozen, due to the 310s in them". What are "310s"? Are 55s really "a dime-a-dozen"? I've been looking for one (in southern Indiana) and the last one I looked at was in bad need of a paint job, the foot rest panels were rusted through, it wouldn't idle without stalling, it needed a new 3pt arm and 1 rear tire was shot. The guy still wanted $3800 (price included an old bush hog in poor condition). What should I expect to pay for one that doesn't need work to be put to use right away? Thanks, Danny

I was referring to 55 series--1755, 1855, and 1955 tractors, not the utility Super 55 and 550 series ones. '310's' are the 6 cylinder, 310 cubic inch Oliver/Waukesha engines used in the 17, 18 & 1955 tractors. They had some problems, which gave them a very bad reputation, which, even though, with proper preventative rebuilding procedures, could be minimilized. Unfortunately, the bad reputation became too strongly rooted before these rebuilding techniques became better known.

I'm not sure, but I think the return to Perkins power in the 2-85/2-105 Whites, along with a MAJOR restyle(including colour) was partly White's way of trying to distance themselves from this issue.

i run a 1550 and a white 2-70 and neighbor has 1850 with perkins they are all good tractors but make us paranoid about break downs. we are both real interested in this remake or whatever it may take to see oliver have a go again. count us in.

being a harvester man i even like your idea. they really missed it the college boys years ago in the 70,s wen they went to the WHITE name instead of staying with oliver, and that sardine can color. ran a 1850 for many years a real nice tractor and it was cheaper to buy at the time than the 966 harvester.i think what you are going to see over at AGCO is a new name and in the end it will all be MASSY-FERGESON they seem to be the only ones at AGCO thats selling tractors,hope it dont go like harvester and ford and new holland and case all with a over sea,s owner.
