You great people will recall I am rebuilding a carb (1969 White 2-44 backhoe) and while I am at it, checking fuel line (done) and manifolds for air leaks replacing gaskets. The fibre gasket between the manifolds was shot. Copper gaskets not too bad.
The [Gas] engine also ran-on (dieseled) quite a bit when warm. Someone suggested I might have quite a bit of carbon in the combustion chambers. Sure enough the manifold is very black and thick with the stuff. So as to avoid taking the top off [I need to get the tractor to work!], is there anything I can squirt in there (the engine) that will ignite when I fire her up again to clean her out a bit? Many thanks in advance.

By the run-on and the dark black carbon description, it sounds like it was running too rich. A properly rebuilt and adjusted carb should fix this. Your best fix is to get it as clean as possible before you put everything back together. The carbon will probably not burn out by itself, but some water out of a garden hose when the engine is hot might help. This is not for the faint-of-heart and a lot of damage COULD happen if you don"t know what you are doing.
Enough said, I guess.
