I am going to be pulling the top off the hydraulics on my 1650. It is leaking oil into the rearend. Do I need to pull the pto shaft before I take the top off, or can I wait to do that until I need to remove the hydraulic pump? I am hoping I have a bad gasket or hole in the pan. Is the gasket that people say might be the problem the gasket between the pan and the casting or a gasket on the pump itself?

Adam,

I've had more of those apart than I'd care to talk about. There are two large gaskets, one between the pan and tractor casting itself and one between the pan and the top cover. Their is a skinny piece of the gasket that goes across the top (best way I can describe it)towards the front of the tractor. If this piece was broken, it would dump oil into the trans/rear end. Anywhere else the gasket was broken would cause oil to leak down along the outside of the whole tractor casting. This is not a likely cause of the leak. It is basically a 50/50 between the pump gasket and a hole in the pan. If you have a hole in the pan- the pan is not cheap to replace- braze it or get someone to braze it for you.

I do not see any holes in the pan and the pan gasket was in good condition and not leaking that I can tell. I poured gas in the pan and did not see any leaking out the bottom. Guess it's time to rebuild the pump.

Oh Man you caught me off guard. If you have a hole in the pan, do check your axle bearings. If your front seal on the pump leaks hydraulic oil, it will go into the rear end. I would check the hydraulic pressure with the tractor warmed up before I tore it down. If you have a hydraulic flow meter by all means check pump output as well. J.
