I recently had my 550 split and the PTO repaired. I used it one time last fall to mow 7 acres. This year it mowed for 100 yards and the PTO kicked out. I looked in the inspection plate and found the teeth to one of the PTO disks. I greased the PTO and clutch recently, like today and three weeks ago. The tractor has seen little use through the winter. Why would the new disks shatter? Other than that, the tractor runs great.

Any thoughts? Any one want to buy it. I need something newer.

Bob, thanks for your interest. If I do decide to sell, I might try selling it on Ebay. With it running as well as it does, and the PTO being fixable, I would be in the $2500 - $3500 range. Closer to 3500 if I fix it, and closer to 2500 if I don't.

Concerning the problem. I've opened the inspection port and spent some time looking around. One of the three linkages is broken. I am going to get the link's two bars fabricated. They are simple and 3/32 tool steel will work fine. The broken link caused two of the five PTO clutch disks to loose their teeth. The other 3 disks are undamaged. In other words, I may not have to split the tractor. The links can be replaced through the inspection port. I will do that and test the tractor again.

Let me tell you a bit about the tractor. I purchased it for $2500 two years ago. I have since done a bit of work on it. These are the items that are new on the tractor.

NEW ITEMS - Gas tank
Radiator
Water pump
Thermostat
PTO clutch disks and separator disks
Two internal grease tubes (clutch and PTO)
Some hydrolic work (new and rebuilt parts)
Lights
Two front tires
Points and coil
Key switch and light switch
Carborator overhaul
Gas filter bowl
Starter selinoid
Battery cable and battery

The tractor starts well and runs great. There is very little smoke on startup and none during running. It also runs well and steady at very low idle. The tractor has alot of power. The hydrolics are in good condition and the fluid is clean.

Items that need attention:
The head valve cover needs a new gasket. I took the cover off one day, and now it leaks small amounts of oil. The generator doesn't work, never has. I planned on switching to an alternator and electronic ignition. Haven't done it yet. I very seldom charge the battery, the tractor seems to start and run fine for months before needing to be charged. The seat spring is weak. I live with that. The fuel gauge doesn't work.

That is a very fair description of the tractor. If your interested, let me know. I'm not absolutely sure I want to sell, but for the right price I might.

David
