550 hydraulic whining noise

When my loader (on 1958 Gas 550) is operating, after the oil has warmed up, and the loader is stopped on one position, a loud whining noise starts up.
As soon as you touch the lever to raise or lower it, the noise stops immediately, but then comes back again when it sits.
Is this an indication of anything bad?
The loader lifts pretty well, and no apparent leaks...and bucket can stay up for weeks/months if you leave it that way. It works off the external valve.

Hi Chris,

As you know I'm new to the 550 but if I was to guess based on hydraulic knowledge I would say it's a pressure releaf vavle problem. I take it that the noise didn't happen before you put the loader on?

I'm sure one of the supper knowledgable guys here will have the exact answer for you.

I have never NOT had the loader on it, but it never worked well - and stoped altogther - until I rebuilt and cleaned the external valve - there was a bit of gasket wedged in a port, stopping it working. I think I recall the whining from when I purchased it.

I will look in the manual under pressure relief valve and see what it says. You mean when there is nothing going on, the under-pressure oil goes on by-pass due to a weak or faulty valve. That makes sense. Thanks again. Chris.

Nothing better than 2 Canadian's in a good discussion. EH! I need to think on that a little more. I need to think about the purpose of the other spool. 550 tractors were not that popular here and since they gave few problems I didn't work on many. Does your tractor make the noise when you use the 3 point? Is your 3 point adjusted properly. Does you loader have single or double acting cylinders. Start there and I will sleep on it. J.

Hi John,
Double cylinders but only the lift end hooked up. Blank plug in the other ends.
I have never used the 3 point, but it seems to work OK without load. I have it set raised to max to stop the arms bumping against the tires which have chains. I will raise it and lower it tonight to see if there is anything to report. I wish I had an implement to hook up, but I don't. I will try to tie a spare wheel/tire or something to it to lift.
