The brakes on my 1650 don't work very well, I pulled the cover off the right side, had a lot of dust in there, cleaned that out and it seems to work better now. I cracked the cover loose on the left side and oil runs out, lots of it. In order to fix this, do I need the 2 teflon rings and a new seal? Can all this be replaced without pulling the brake housing? If I replace the teflon rings, will this stop the oil from getting into the brake housing?

The left bull pinion is pressure lubed from the transmission pump. I think because they wanted to make sure it was getting oil while plowing.

I'm not following you on the Teflon rings? You just need to change the seal. You won't have to take the whole housing off,but it's kind of a b!tch to get the seal out. It's not just a cup type, light seal. It's a tube type, for lack of a better way to put it. In other words,it doesn't have one side open,so its thick and heavy. About all you can do is use a chisel to distort it until you get it loose enough to get out.

Heres a trick a service guy taught me on those seals: put a sheet metal screw through the metal of the seal, preferably through a small peice of chain, and use a slide hammer to pop it out. Worked great on my 1600 when I did them.

According to the parts book, there are two teflon rings behind the seal it looks like, only on the left side. I know I have a hydraulic leak into the rear end, will replacing the seal keep the oil out of the brake housing even with this other problem?

I changed the seals only on my 1550 which has a setup similar to a 1650. I drilled a hole in the seal and put a screw in it. Then pried under the screw head to get the seal out. That should take care of any gear oil getting into the brake housing. I really don't think you want to attempt to remove the brake housing. That looks to be a major project. The hydraulic oil leaking into the rear end could be a few different things. Maybe an O-ring in the hydraulic plumbing or a crack/hole in the pan that separates the hydraulic oil from the rear end. I think the hyd pump is actually in the rear end and has tubes that connect it to the rest of the system. There is a gasket and/or O-ring that can leak. Either way it requires removal of the top cover of the rear end.

Really not that bad of a job to remove the brake housing. Just keep track of the shims behind the housing as they set the preload on the bull pinion bearing. You can then pull the pinion and replace the teflon rings.

I tried drilling in to mine. Broke 2 small tatanium bits and gave up on that.

Sounds like something that would happen to me. I actually didn't have much trouble with them. Now removing the left wheel hub to change the axle seal was another story. Actually had to cut the u-bolts out and replace them.

You will have to pull the brake housing off to change the teflon rings on the bull pinion if I remember correctly. The seal can be replaced without removing it.
