M-S TSX811 Carb rebuild (1969 Gas White 2/4 = 550 Industrial). 3 Questions please gents...
A few of you have given me ideas on the problems with my 2-44. Have checked fuel line, seems to be fine. Only works with choke, and stutters like crazy when applying load and even back-fires if choke not in the sweet spot - and also runs on when ignition turned off.
So carb rebuild is obvious. Well, I have followed the manual to the letter EXCEPT this 811 looks a bit different to other models illustrated. For example:
1) Main Adjustment Needle Valve looks nothing like the manual. It enters the base of the carb. I have a nut (stamped 0625) with four holes beneath the threaded top - with a separate threaded thumb-screw insert that closes off the holes as you screw it in [Question: the rubber? ring on the insert was crushed and corroded - how to get another - is it just a seated O ring?]
2) Behind that, my Drain Plug has no filter/strainer above it. [Question: Does that matter?]
3) For the life of me I cannot get the idle jet out - I will grind an old screwdriver tomorrow to fit better - but I fear I have ruined the head. [Question: how do I replace that? Or can I carefully cut new screwdriver ears in it? I think the hole is still OK]

It is obvious that the previous owner has already rebuilt the thing (not removing some smaller parts to clean - like idle jet!). But replacement kit parts, like float valve, are bright and shiny and gaskets as new + no paint on outside. But I have taken it completely apart, except shaft packings, cleaned it very thoroughly again in carb cleaner...I did note the the idle adjustment stop screw was not adjusted correctly, so I will pay particular attention to adjusting everything properly when I put it all back together.
Thanks for your help. When I finish this, the dripping TSX603 on my '58 550 should be a breeze!

Re: M-S TSX811 IDLE JET in reply to Chris Van der Vyver, 04-01-2008 22:38:47
As I thought, I had to drill out the idle jet. At least I now know what was wrong with the carb.

Anyone know where to get a replacement? YT don't have them.

Got my IDLE JET! in reply to Chris Van der Vyver, 04-02-2008 07:42:20
WooHoo! The fine folks at Maibach Tractor dug one out for me from a local carb rebuilder. Those folks are great.

ALSO Roberts Carb Repair, who build and supply 2 cylinder JD carbs, took the time to find out for me that the idle jet on a TSXM245 will fit my TSX811 and they sent me one too.

There are some very nice people out there who don't only think about $$$$s....you don't get that at the Mall do ya??

Re: not all carb kits are equal! in reply to Chris Van, 04-04-2008 14:18:39
Well, bear in mind that my 550 shop manual does not cover this late carb, and the rebuild kit diamgrams are generalised and do not match my TSX811. It turns out my carb never had an idle jet installed! No wonder it was useless.
The damaged jet I had to drill out was the economizer jet, which is seated deep down, right next to the idle jet. I am now trying to locate one.

Also, I now see that not all carb kits are created equal. The Agco ones have spare Throttle Shaft Seal, Retainer and Cup. The eBay ones do not. Since my carb had this seal missing too, I now have to purchase another (better) rebuild kit! The better kits also have the felt packing washer you need for the choke shaft.
