I am curious if anyone can help point out some good positives and negatives between a 1800 Oliver diesel and a Case 1030. I need a tractor to run a round baler and put hay out year round. They are both pretty decent tractors, but I am not sure which one would be more reliable and more likely to start good in adverse weather conditions. If I buy the Oliver I need a wide front and a drawbar if anybody has one close to Indiana. Thanks for your help

Ryan it took me a while to get used to the hydraulics, they are sorta primitive on my 1800C. But other than that the old tractor handles the baler well.

I have other Olivers so I am glad to hear the Oliver would be a better fit. It is a 1961 so I guess it is a series A. Will a front end off of a 1600 utility fit a 1800?

Oh man you are not comparing apples to apples here. That A series diesel is a little less than 70 horsepower and the people next door had a 1030 Case to plant with. It was close to 100 horsepower. If the 1800 does not have hydrostatic steering the answer is no. I will send you an e-mail J.

I'd probably shy away from the 1030, they were a little weak in the rearend. If it was a 930, I'd go for it. I think the 1800 would be fine. Which series is it? The later the better.

The 1800 is a lot older tractor and therefore doesn't have the same features.
One other thing the 1030 is bigger.

Can't say I'm real up on either brand, but I have a cousin who farms with Case tractors. He used to have several of the 30 series. Now he doesn't even fix them if something big goes wrong. He scraps them. Too much trouble with the heads, and engines in general.

I'm not real up on my Cases, but one of the "10 somethings" had some serious transmission problems- might check the Case board to get more info. The 1800 Oliver has no serious general shortcomings, to my knowledge, but of course, as with any old tractor, condition is crucial.
