When I engage the starter on my 1855, the bell housing jumps all over the place. The starter bendix only engages a little. Seems like the flywheel is jumping around. I am not familiar with the Oliver. I have a shop manual, but it isnt helping me much. The tractor has the Hydraul Shift option. If I can get the motor started, it will move, but the bell housing shakes terribly. Any clues as to what is broken? Looks like it is time to split the old tractor.
Thanks in advance for your help. Dennis

Also make sure the plate that the bell housing bolts to isn't broken. There should also be a bolt through the bottom of the frame under the OU to help support it.

When I bought the tractor it was missing all the flex plate bolts. Motor and bell housing were split about an inch. I got it started like this. When I got it home, I replaced all the bolts I could get to. With the motor and bell housing drawn tightly together, it is actually worse as far as the shaking goes. The starter does not engage the flywheel correctly. Seems like the the flywheel is jumping around too. The motor or transmission dont shake, just the clutch housing.

Gas or diesel? I didn't like the sound of "I replaced all the bolts I could get to".

The flywheel bolts on a diesel are particular on length and thread pitch. The engine if diesel also cannot handle much of any vibration without grenading.Like J said,no need to split tractor.

I was expecting to see bolts that go directly through the bell housing into the motor. Instead I found bolts that went though a spacer plate to the bell housing. I guess there are bolts through this plate into the motor that are hidden inside the bell housing? "Those are the ones I couldnt get to." I took the starter off and checked the flywheel. It seems tight. I dont think that the motor is bolted to the spacer plate. The motor has good solid mounts and does not move. I dont always word everything just right! Sorry for the confusion. And thanks for the help. I have learned a lot from reading the stuff guys have written on here.

Take the starter off. If the bell housing jumps all over the place it must be loose? Once the starter is off stick a bar in the starter hole and see if the flywheel moves back & forth. If it does see if the front pulley moves back and forth. No you don't split it. Take the long PTO shaft out and get ready to pull the engine and the hydraul as a unit. You better do a little more reading in that book again if you were thinking spliting it. Did you check to see if the motor mount bolts are there and tight?
