I am in the process of installing the steering gear on my 30. The question is, do I use 80w90 in it or grease? I have checked 3 of them and 1 has gear oil, and two have grease, I am assuming it should have gear oil and the ones with grease probably leaked. My manual does not show what type it takes.

Hi cj in wisconsin,

Tim in NB & c35 are right. EP 140 gear oil was the original spec.

More recently, some prefer to use JOHN DEERE, (YES, JD) combine SPECIAL CORN HEAD GREASE (from cartridge tube) # AN102562. It's viscosity is between oil and grease and will not seap out like the oil if everything is not perfect.

c35 is right! Cockshutt originally called for 140 weight in the 30 gear boxes. People put grease in them when the seals go bad. Btw it holds 2-1/2 imperial pints.

Takes 140w100 or simialar, you can get a quart of it at most auto supply places.
