77 Hydraulics

I'm installing a hydraulic unit in my 77 (came with a mechanical lift).
After pulling the mechanical lift off the tractor, I concluded that I had
to pull the PTO clutch and shaft out, then install the hydraulics and reinsert the shaft and clutch. I'm having difficulty pushing the shaft back into the transmission. I assume lining up the splines on the crankshaft may be a problem. Is their a trick that I'm missing?

I am not sure if this matters or not but I believe the transmission input shaft (your pto shaft runs through this hollow splined shaft) is longer on those with the power lift than those with the hydraulics. I replaced the transmission input shaft on my 1955 Super 77 and the used shaft I got was longer than what I had and I had to cut it to match what I had. I don't see how this would matter though. The pto shaft drives the hydraulic unit so the splines need to match up on the hydraulic unit and also into the splined hub on the flywheel. My I&T Manual mentions that the pto drive shaft is supported midway between the flywheel and clutch by a steady bearing in the transmission compartment and can be accessed after removing the pto shaft and the transmission top front cover or power lift unit. It may be hanging up on this bearing somehow. Try installing the pto shaft without the hydraulic unit or the power lift and see if it goes in all the way. It helps to have two people so one can push the shaft in and the other can help guide it through the hollow transmission input shaft This may help you see where the problem is at.
