I had looked at an Oliver semi- mounted plow, model 546 I believe. Can someone give me an idea when they were made? It is missing the braces behind the moldboards and the coulters. Were these available with a gauge wheel? It has a funny looking bracket about where one would be but Im guessing it was something they just added and isnt factory. Does anyone have any pictures of plows they can send so I can get an idea what they had for gauge wheel? How much does the front weigh? I have an M5 MM and wondering if it will lift it enough for transport home. Thank you

In answer to your question of when they were made, I know they were made in 1972 as I bought one new that year. How much before or after I'm not sure without doing some digging. I believe the 546 was the 14" or 16" cut depending on how they were set up, moldboards etc. The similar 548 could be set up for 16" or 18". A good plow.

Does anyone know what the two straps of iron going up on the front hitch that you connect the top link to is for? Does it serve a purpose? I have seen some with and some without.

Yes, mine came with the two strap hitch point for the top link. It pivots at its mounting point on the plow and can neither push nor pull on the top link. What it did do was bump into the extended steering arm on the plow if the front end of the tractor came up too high as J said to prevent upset. Most folks took them off figuring they either had enough front end weight or would be quick enough on the clutch.

It is late (for me) and I am not the big plow guy, or am I thinking real clear at the minute, but you need to hook up the top link if your tractor does not have lower link draft sensing. Also if you mean what I think you mean it is the safety linkage to keep you from upsetting the tractor.

Thank you all for the info. That makes logical sense about the straps. I had always seen the two strap irons welded on the front of the bottom hitch and never knew what they were for until I saw the two long straps in a picture. Are the braces behind the moldboards interchangeable with older plows? I am missing all 4 on this one.

Yes they had an optional gauge wheel. The only time we sold the gauge wheel on a plow was if you were using a tractor where draft control was through the top link. Take your cylinder along to lift the back if you are in doubt.

Do you have any pictures of the gauge wheel set up? This plow has the rear wheel like all semi mounted plows do. The gauge wheel bracket was for a round shaft about 1 1/2 to 2" hole. I thought most of them were square shaft. Is it necessary to have one on for plowing or wont it make that much difference?
