Adding winch to positive ground 550?

Before I go an fry my winch by mistake!

My tractor (1958 Gas 550) is old style positive ground. I usually use my winch off my truck - slides into the hitch receiver. But I am welding a hitch receiver onto my loader frame so I can haul logs etc. with same winch.
So...do I hook up the red winch lead to the hot (negative) side of my tractor battery and the black to the ground (= opposite of my truck)??

Which ever wire you hook to the + side on you truck you should also hook it to the + on your tractor. Grounding makes no difference but being hooked up does. Don't let the fact the tractor is + ground throw you. You hook it up + to + and - to - just on the tractor the + will be what is ground and on the truck the + will be hot. So if the red wire as per the manual hooks to + you ALWAYS hook it to +

Phew! I just knew I should ask before I hooked it up. Thanks!!
I was worried I would ground something out and melt it, like when you melt the end of your screwdriver touching a 'live' wire by mistake.

You just let the ground throw you. On any thing with a + and a - you ALWAYS hook it up the same no matter how the machine is grounded. So if you winch is like one of mine is you hook the red battery clip to the + and the black to the -. Red on battery chargers and every thing else always hooks to the +
