Hi Guys,

I recently purchased a 1650 gas from my neighbor who retired from farming. It is a sound tractor with the exception of a gearing problem in the transmission. About 2 years ago he replaced the 44 tooth gear on the pinion shaft. When he put everything back together 1st, 2nd, 5th, and R1 worked correctly, 3,4,6, and R2 won't. In fact when you shift the shift lever up to the nuetral position and let the clutch out you'll kill it because it acts like it is locked into two gears. He claims that he thinks he turned a gear around backwards and this is the problem. I was thinking that maybe he didn't line some of the shifting forks and rails up properly when he reinstalled everything. Since he didn't want to fool with it, he only used the gears that would work. I'm ready to tear into it and get this fixed so I can use it properly. If I have to get back into that bevel pinion shaft do I need to split the tractor? I was wondering if anyone could offer any thoughts or advice before I start this project.

Sincerely,
Chad

Your problem is on the top shaft. Send me a reply as I leaving in a couple of minutes. If it has an over under or hydrapower you will need to remove it or split it. Send me a phone number. J.
