I have a model 40 that I am going to add on a hydraulic pump off of a model 30 . It runs off the governor and I am curious, can a guy drain the trans and run universal tractor fluid in the trans and use it as a reservoir, or am I just asking for trouble, I would obviously run a remote filter, but dont really want to add a reservoir to the tractor unless I have to.

Should be able to make a reservoir out of PVC and mount behind grill. Simple stuff.

cj, you can make a reservoir to go behind the grill like the original ones did. They were round and were approx 5" in diameter. Do you have any pics of the original tank? I have hydraulics on my 40.

Does your 40 not have hyd now?Early ones had it mounted on gov, later ones had pump under rearend top cover, made you could add one there.I see them on ebay every now and then.It runs off shaft that goes to pto.

I just thought since the trans has straight cut gears and is not sharing gear oil with the rear end that it might be feasible. I have 2 reservoirs from the model 30 but it wont fit in there with the steering in the way.

I would talk you out of that. The pump is going to have to pick up the oil out of the transmission. In plain englise, gear pumps do not suck oil up hill very well. What are you going to do with the hydraulic system once you install one? Duty times affect reservoir size. More questions? J.

J, I would like to run a small round baler with it. The 40 has plenty of power and wide frt, I am tired of running over the windrow with the 720 JD narrow frt.

just get a small aftermarket reservoir like on log splitters hold about 5 to 8 gallons oil and bolt it to side of tractor near pump at same level or even on front. that is a low volume pump and would be slow but would most likely work. you will either need 2 of the pesco valves or a twin spool to run bailer and rear door. Have fun.

I screwed up I thought the trans was seperate from the rear end. I was wrong, they share oil. I guess it was just a good idea gone bad,

I don't know about the Hyd fluid in the trans but some of the early 40s with the governor mounted hyd pump had a round reservior mounted
in front like the 30s but it was shaped different from the 30.They are hard to find,I would like one myself.
