1855 starter problem

I just bought an Oliver 1855 fence row special.
The guy told me the starter went out and he just left it. With new batteries it cranked right over.
The problem is that as soon as I touch the positive cable to the battery it starts cranking. I just used the cable as a starter switch, and left the cable hanging to drive it home. I need to figure out if the wires at the starter are on correctly. I am sure the guy has had the starter off at some point. I have a manual with a wiring diagram, but it is pretty vague. The starter has two large terminals at 12:00 and 6:00, and two small terminals at about 10:00 and 4:00. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks, Dennis

The large terminals is power in and out. The large one at 6 o'clock should jump to the stud on the side of the starter, the 12 o'clock one goes directly to the battery.

The 2 smaller ones are as follows,... One to energize power to the ignition if it is gas, (Not used for a diesel application) and the other small terminal goes to a key switch.

Power is put to this 2nd small terminal then energizes the selenoid, engaging the bendix drive and then turning the starter.

Just hook up the large cables then jump with a wire from the battery to either of the small terminals to find which one goes to the starter key switch.

Cowboy, Thanks for your help. This is my first Oliver and my first Diesel. I would like to run this past you before I turn on the juice. I have 3 wires attached at the 12:00 large post. The Pos. Battery cable, the preheater switch wire and an unknown 10 Guage wire I believe goes to the Amp guage. I have a 10 Guage pink wire attached on the switch side on the solenoid. The large 6:00 post is attached to the starter body via a flat bar type connector. Nothing is connected to the other small post. Does this sound familiar? I dont want to fry anything. I appreciate your help. Dennis

Hey Coyboy, I gave it a try and nothing. I need to check the neutral safety switch. Also I looked up the starter number (Delco#) and it is the wrong part number. My book says it is a 1850 gas starter. Much less amps and maximum RPM. I guess it wires the same as a 1855 diesel starter.

Did you try removing the small wire from the selenoid and use a small jump wire and momentary touch from the battery cable to the small terminal. Be sure tractor is in Neutral !!!

This will tell you if it is in the wiring somewhere or in the starter or selenoid.
