Restoring my grandfathers tractor for him and found something in the barn for it. It is the char lynn hydromotor with the shafts. That is all that is there and no other parts. Can I plumb this into the hydroulic pump pictured below. Or do I have to find a belt drive power steering pump and plumb it up that way. any thoughts would be great. third party image

I have a Char-Lynn power steering unit on a Super 77 Diesel. The pump is mounted on the rear of the generator, it has a special splined shaft and a special rear mount on the generator that holds and drives the pump. I needed the generator repaired several years ago and the shop that did the work said the special shaft in the generator was very expensive if I needed to replace it. If the generator on your tractor has this splined shaft out the rear that is where the pump might have been mounted. If the generator was replaced they might just have eliminated the power steering because of the cost of replacing the shaft etc.

If you dont have the original belt divin pump, get a used chevy power steering pump. With a little braket work they will mount nice and have the correct psi. I have done this many time and always works good. Take your time and mount it nice, it will be worth it, plus chevy ps pumps are cheap.

Get the seperate pump. We had one customer that had one on a Super 88 that ran off the hydraulic unit. It was more of a problem than 25 normal ones running a seperate pump. You would need a flow divider and a relief valve plus it eeds to be converted to power beyond.

Suggestion on installing it in reply to PH, 03-06-2008 17:31:44
That Char-Lynn unit is called a Torque Generator. It will not stand up to more than 1100 lbs of hyd pressure, or it will bust. Install a Tee on the pressure line leaving the hyd pump. Run one line to the orginal destination, and run the other to the torque generator. The line going to the torque generator will need a relife valve in it that is set at 1000lds MAX pressure. The outgoing line from the torque generator needs to be tied into the return line going back to the hyd oil holding tank. If you install it like this it will work great. Lots of guys have recently installed them on Farmall H's & M's. If you have any problems ask some of them. They have always been very helpful to me.
