I am restoring 2 OC-3's I noticed that the rearends are positioned different on these 2 machines. The green one has one tranny and the rearends are positioned so the front cross-bar is mounted on the bellhousing bolts. The yellow one has a Ware loader and has 2 tranny's. The rearends are positioned so the front cross-bar is mounted 6 inches in front of the bellhousing. The brackets can't be interchanged. This puts the tracks farther forwards. I seen another OC-3 in a junk-yard and it also had 2 tranny's. Can anyone explain to me why the differences?

It sounds like your Ware loader OC3 has the Trasco Auxiliary Transmission, many of them did.

The Ware machine should be based on the "industrial" model OC3 which had the "rollback" option, ie. the frame is moved rearward in relation to the undercarriage. I always think that it should have been called the "roll forward" (tracks moved forward) but apparently they forgot to ask me when the made that decision! As mentioned above, the reason is to better support the weight of front mounted blades and loaders that were never envisioned when the HG was designed.

The "rollback" option is easy to spot. The final drives are rotated one bolt hole @ the transmission so that the rear sprocket and undercarriage is moved forward (oops, I mean the frame back). The front track supports (brackets) are inline with the starter as opposed to the bellhousing on a standard tractor. The brackets are a stronger design that doesn't interchange directly.

Go to Cletrac.org for more info.

The biggest knock on the OC-3 has always been that its too fast- you can't control the blade fast enough to keep up with the forward progress, so "leveling" is difficult w/o slipping the clutch. So a lot of guys put another transmission in them. A Ford Model A tranny was the most popular, and there was an article in the Oliver magazine some years back with specs and plans for installing- including making a bell housing out of a piece of 6 inch well casing, as I recall.

The bellhousing on this OC-3 looks factory made. The other one I saw was the same, like it came from the factory with the second transmission in it. The drive shaft does'nt look homemade.

The reason for the differances is to position the track assembiles farther forward for loader work (tractor with loader) or more to the rear for drawbar work. OC4 and OC46 loader tractors were designed that way also.

The second gearbox between the bellhousing and the transmission could be a reducing box to slow the tractor in all the reg. gears or a travel reverser box that allows shifting fom forward to reverse in any gear and faster shfting for loader work. These were optional.

I don't have an answer to your questions, but I'd sure love to know where that junk yard is located!
