I have been looking at crankshafts for my Oliver 88/S88 and need to know if there is a difference between a Gas crankshaft and a Diesel one? If so, what are the differences?

Also, will a shortblock from a Gas engine work to replace my Diesel shortblock if the bore and stroke are the same?

I changed a diesel to gas on a 880 block. The difference is in the front of the engine .Front timeing cover and plate.Idler bushings and diesel pump drive and the diesel crank was what they called tacco hardend. If you have crank number 191311 it would be hardened thats what a book I have said. Also at serial no. 9558338 and above on S88 have the hardend crank.

I read on pare 2 of this forum, under crankshaft materials, the deisel crank shaft is harder than the gas crankshaft. There were a few comments on the subject on page 2,

I did read that. Thanks,.... I guess my best bet is finding a good S88 or 880 short block from a Diesel then I will be all set.

Parts book that I looked at showed either #190111 or 191211. The crank removed from my tractor has the first number cast into it, but then the center 2 numbers were mostly ground off and stamped with a 12 making it a diesel crank (19"12"11)???

Maybe it was reworked and hardened to make it a diesel crank or what???
