Hi all,

Came across an Oliver 545 combine with a perkins. Is this a reliable piece of equipment if in good condition or should I stay away? I am planning on using it for 75 acres of corn and soybeans. Thanks in advance!

Hey RR how do you like your 7300? I ran one when I was in High School, It was a diesel, It ran really well, But we put these big rice tires on it which must have stressed the final drive. But that was our fault not the combines I can't remember exactly but something gave way down there. And the auger needed to be longer, I don't think you could empty right into a semi trailer. Also we had to reinforce a brace near the pitman bar on the qwik-cut header.

Well, like you said, that auger is short. Hard to even get it in a large gravity box.

Fred
I have an old McCormick IH 80 pull type combine, built in 1963. I thought parts would be hard to get. I did some resurch prior to buying it 3 1/2 years ago, and quiet a few parts where still avallible, and quiet a few parts where obsulite. I managed to pick up a nother combine for parts. I took what parts I thought that I should keep, and scaped the rest. See if you can do the same thing. Try and see if you can find another combine to part out, and go from there.

No history of major problems with this machine. The perkins would be a plus over the gas machines of that era. If it was well taken care of should be ok as a hobby machine. Any brand of any color that is 40 years old, wore out, and misused will test your patience.

Do you have a dealer nearby that can get you needed parts? If not are you comfortable having them shipped? There are a few who specialize in this type of business that I rely on.

Well, heres my thoughts...the combine is pushing outwards of 40 years old--do you plan on making this your main combine? Eventhough we all deny it, Agco is bound to begin obsoleting off some parts sooner than later, and these combines will become some of the first. I have not run one of these combines, but I have heard they have a ton of belts, and just from looking at them, the grain tank is poorly placed. I'm sure in the 60's these machines were mighty impressive, but farming has changed ALOT since then. For a backup combine I'd say do it, but as your main machine I'd be leary. Only my thoughts...

I'd check with A&I Products on those belts and parts. I've got a 7300. I went on there and looked, you can get about everything for the 7300s from them. I just wish mine had the Perkins engine instead of the 318 Chrysler gas.
