Looking at aftermarket air filters (like K&N etc) for my truck. What do you guys use or like? I have a 2002 Chevy HD with 6.0 gas. Can always use more power but really hoping to help gas milege. Thanks.

Google Duramax Air Filter test. You will be shocked at the results. Save your money and stick with OEM filters. That filter test was originally posted on this site under tool talk, but I think has disappeared. I googled it and found it again.

Over oiled K&N air filters will slowly coat the Mass Air Flow sensor, causing the ECM to add fuel and eventually plug the Catalytic converter. I work for a GM dealer and have seen this several times. The old paper filters work best, the filter on your truck is so huge it takes forever to plug.

A few years back, I got "sucked in" to a KN air filter kit. It consisted of a filter and a new filter box. Everyone I talked to swore power and mileage. Well, I'm one of those nuts who every time I fill up figure out my mileage and I can tell you NO DIFFERENCE! 2002 Silverado with the 5.3. 100,000 miles and still runs good.

It sounds like you"ve got your filter all picked out and nobody is going to talk you out of it, but.....

The K & N filter actually lets bigger particles through the filter compared to the factory filter. That"s why it flows better. Plus the oil that you use to coat the element can ruin the MAP sensor or at least cause it to give false readings to electronic control module. There is one major manufacturer what warns you not to use an oiled, lifetime filter because it can void the warranty.

But, it"s your truck and the advertisements are awful hard to resist. However, you will not see the increase in HP or mileage like they claim.

I appreciate your input. I do not have one picked out. I was looking in the J.C. Whitney book and they have a ton of different ones. There are even a couple that don't use oil. I know a lot of people install aftermarket filters on their trucks. I figure if that many people do it there must be some advantage. That or a lot of people wasting their money.

I am not so much interested in gaining power. I was driving a 1986 Chevy with a worn out 350. Most anything will be better than that. I would like to help the gas mileage a little.

Matt
