I'm having trouble getting a 77 RC to start. It last ran about 5 years ago. The engine is free, the starter will spin when hooked up to a battery charger but won't turn the engine. Also, I have replaced the wiring, fuse box, plugs, points, condenser, rotor, rotor cap, coil, regulator, and battery. I've cleaned the ground connection. I've followed the owner's manual wiring diagram, although the connections on the back of the ignition switch are not as clear as I'd like. The switch itself has nice solid "click" when turning to the various positions. I have not changed the ammeter and it is pretty rusty on the back of it. I've also changed the oil, and oil filter. There's no oil in the radiator and no water/antifreeze in the oil pan. The radiator contains water and antifreeze which I have not changed. Anybody have any ideas? Any help would be greatly appreciated

Male Gale do you have good spark at the sparkplugs when you turn it over? If so check and see if its getting gas up throught the carbarator by pulling off the air intake tube at the carbarator, roll the engine over a couple of times and see if there is any gas in the carbarator. I think that the float in the carbarator may be stuck or one of the jets may be plugged up. If you haven't ran the tractor for a few years it could even have a valve sticking open but I kind of doubt that, but its not hard to find out if you need to give it a compression test. Good luck Mike

Mike, thanks for the reply. I haven't got the starter to turn the engine over yet so I haven't been able to check the spark. When I turn the switch on nothing happens electrically. When I tried to polarize the generator after putting on the new regulator I got a very weak spark at the "B" regulator terminal instead of a good spark. Do you know how the back of the combination switch is supposed to be wired? I've wired it like the owner's manual says but the diagram of the switch is not too clear? Any suggestions? Thanks again, for your reply.

Male Gayle I talked to a friend where I used to work at a White dealership and got a diagram of the igintion switch if you are intrested let me have your E Mail Address and I will E Mail the diagram. Now with your problem of a weak spark at the voltage regulator I wouldn't worry about that until you have current to everything that you should have to start and run the old girl. The ammeter may have to be replaced but you won't know for sure until you can start it and see if it works. A good test light will help you find out if you have current to everything too.

I agree with Mark it sounds like your trouble as described is with the starter not engaging. Pull the starter and test it to make sure the bendix is coming out to engage the flywheel. Good Luck and keep us posted ! Von W.C. Ohio

I would also check the bendix. A couple of other ideas... you mentioned a "click" when you moved the switch - how about the starter button? Have you checked its condition and whether it is wired up? Check to be sure the valve is open at the sediment bowl and you can loosen the feed line to the carb to see if it is getting gas. If all else fails, hook a chain to it and give it a pull and see what happens!
