I"ve been hearing conflicting information on what type of oil to use in my 560 Cockshutt with the 4 cylinder Perkins Diesel. I"ve been told straight 30w and also to use 15w40. Which is the best to use in this tractor?????

My father for years used Valvoline 30w in the engine of our Fordson Super Major. When I took over the tractor after his death, I continued.
When I owned my own Highway Tractors, (big trucks) I used Shell Rotella 15W40. After I quit driving truck, I went to work as a parts person, at a local Case IH Dealership. They had lab tests compairing engine oils. The formulas that Case IH uses surpasses all formulas in other engine oils, includeing Valvoline, and Shell Rotella, allowing at least 100 more hour of operation between oil changes. After reading all the reasurch that Case IH did,I switched oils. I also use it in my Fordson Dexta, 880 david brown, my 655 Massy Fergasun swather, and will my 1650 Coskshutt. I have real good luck with it and highly recomend it to everyone out there.
Go to your nearest Case IH dealer an ask to see the specks on their oils. You will be impressed. Most Case IH dealers sell their oils in bulk.

I have never been one to change brands of oil once an engine has been started out on a particular brand, but in these older tractors it is hard to know what has been used over the years. I have a 570 Diesel that I use 30W. Penzoil Long Life in because that is what the previous owner used. I use 15w -40 Shell Rotella in everything else. The weight you use depends a lot on where you live as far as temperature extremes. The main thing to remember is use an oil that is formulated for Diesel engines, not gasoline.

Thanks for the input. I had been leaning towards the 15w40, but wasn't quite sure. The tractor is in Kansas, so the weather goes from one extreme to the other.
