I've finally got my manuals and I was reading them as to my 3 pth problem, when I noticed that they recommend 10w-30 in the gear case/transmission along with "additive". You guys have previously suggested using 80W-90. Is this in leu of the additive? Why so heavy of oil?

Any "addatives" they list are no longer available anyway.

10w30 can be used year round in the hydraulics only. The filler behind and to the right of the seat is the lift fill/check. The trans should have at least 80w90 in it. The trans fill is the aluminium plug behind the dash. 10w30 in the trans would leak out through the PTO seals in short order. As a side note, my original owners manual for my S55 states 140 weight can be used in the trans in the summer, so I split the difference and run 85w140 year round in my S55 trans. It seems to do OK, very little PTO seal leakage.

OK,

I'll trust you guys. I never thought about the seals.

I was surprised that the operator's manual mentioned 10W30. Now the manual is for a newer 550 with the checkerboard grill, I don't know if that makes a difference.

I'll stick with the 80W-90.

Yep. I know all too well that they are different. And I'll double check the manual but I'm sure it says 10W30 for the rear end and the hydraulics.
