My 1550 quit charging. I just changed the alternator and it still does not seem to charge. All the wires seem to be in good condition. Could this be a bad voltage regulator?

I got it charging now. Thanks for the information. My regulator is a larger box about six inches behind the alternator.
I also installed an electronic ignition today and the tractor starts and runs much better. I think I am finaly ready for winter now!

The F post on the regulator was real rusty. I removed the wire scraped the rust of the post and put on a new wire and new connectors.

Yes it could. What series alternator do you have? Do you have a voltmeter?

I am not sure of what series the alternator is, all I know is that it is a delco remy. I don't have a voltmeter but I am thinking about just going to Napa to see if they have a regulator. It appears to old enough to be the original.

If your alternator looks EXACTLY like THIS:
Third Party Image

before rushing off to get a replacment alternator, pull the plug out of the back, and connect a jumper wire from the terminal marked "F" to the the large insulated output stud on the back of the alternator, and start the engine.

This "full-fields" the alternator, making it charge at it's maximum capacity. Hopefully, you have a voltmeter, and can watch the battery voltage. It should QUICKLY come up to 17 Volts, and keep rising. (Don't let it run very long "full-fielded".)

Voltage quickly comes up = Alternator GOOD, probably a bad regulator or wiring is causing your problem.

Voltage DOESN'T come up with alternator "full-fielded = Bad alternator.

I'm just curious, for my own information. Where is the regulator on yours? Mine was a little box, about an inch and a half square, half inch thick on the back of the alternator, self contained so to speak, only one wire running to the alternator from under the dash. My regulator went bad and was going to cost more to fix than it was for a self excitor alternator,so I changed it over. I've kicked myself every since.
