Ok so I took all of the great info I got from some of you guys and tried to drain/flush and fill my hydraulics on my new 550 today.

I started by trying to drain the old oil. I had already cleaned the hydraulic filter and the I put the 1/4 in. pipe in and a hose to a bucket. I started the tractor and nothing came out. I knew it was low from checking it earlier so I poured 3-4 quarts of Kerosene in the hydraulic fill hole under the seat and restarted the tractor....Nothing.

Now I don't have the cap with the dipstick for the hydraulics so I made a wooden dipping stick and stuck it in the hole. There was only 1/8 in. of goo on the end of it, no oil, no kero. I then pulled the level check plug for the rearend and it was over full.

What do you guys think?

I'm worried that the water that had gotten in there has rusted a hole through the hydraulic oil pan.

Guess I'm gonna wait until I get my shop manual in the mail and then lift the top off and see what i can see.

Had an 1800 Oliver that the rear wheel bearing went out and let the bull gear mill a hole in the bottom of the hyd. pan.
Probably not your problem.
good luck

I think you have a hole in the pan, also- if it was a worn pump leaking, it should have pumped something when you restarted after pouring in the kerosene- the fact that the kerosene was already gone points to a hole in the pan. Unfortunately, the pump may also be worn out from running without oil, if it was run that way for awhile. But get it apart, and fix the pan first, then see how the pump works. Much cheaper to pull the top cover twice than to just blindly buy another pump.

Maplestone,Looks like you have it diagnosed correctly. If it had a way for water to enter the lift resevoir, then a rusted hole is likely.Nothing complicated about pulling the lift.Just remove the bolts, dissconnect lift arms and lift off with a hoist. Then lay it on a table turn upside down and have a look.A hole that size should be easy to spot.I'd wait on the manual before inspecting the pump. Also i know of a man in Texas with used parts, pumps ect.

I was already thinking that I wouldn't do any more on this till I get the manuals.

The tractor was outside for probably 4 yrs and I don't know when the hydraulic dipstic went missing but it certainly wasn't the day before I looked at it. I'm actually hoping that it is a hole in the pan vs the pump.

I was talking to my Dad tonight on the phone and he had a line on a "parts" 550. Maybe things will work out.

I think your pump is bad and is leaking.

That doesn't sound cheap either!

Suppose the water could have froze in the pump and hurt it? Or something else?

Are they available and any idea of cost?

Since you were missing the dipstick it could be that water got in there. Did tractor sit outside?

Remember the tractor is 40+ years old. I'd venture to say the pump just went bad.

Last new pump I bought was 20 years ago and it was aftermarket. I had to have machine shop make new end piece for it because it kept blowing out. I replaced all pop off valves too. Thinking that pump was expensive and hard to get. If memory is right it was $500 or more. I haven't seen a source for pumps but if I were you I would take the list of parts suppliers I supplied a few topics back and start lookin.
