Picked up my new 550 today and of course when I went to get the blade that came with it the 3 pth wouldn't lift.

I had it working when I looked at the tractor couple of weeks ago but know it didn't want to work. Since then we've had some mild weather and some rain and now back to freezing so I'm kinda thinking that my problem could be moisture and ice in the hydraulic/transmission.

I think I'm missing the dip stick for the trans. Is it supposed to be on the right side under the seat?

I'll take a picture of the spot where I think the dipstick should be.

The hydraulic resevoir is located under the lift housing (but not in the lower part of the tractor). To drain the oil,1st,if you do not have a remote valve do as follows,(1)-remove the 1/4" pipe plug from the right side of the lift housing.(2)-then install a 1/4"NPT(NATIONAL PIPE THREAD)fitting with a hose attached in its place. This fitting can be as simple as a pipe nipple with a peice of fuel hose clamped to it.(3)Stick the end of the hose into a empty container.(4)With the lift arms in the lowerd position and the control lever in the lowerd position start the engine and operate at idle speed until all the oil is pumped out. When the flow of oil stops then stop the engine to prevent damage to the pump. Then remove the filter from the left side and either clean or replace it.Refill the lift resevoir with approx.9 qts.of sae 10w30 oil."NOTE"If the tractor has a remote valve then drain the oil by removing one of the hose ends and operating the valve. The dipstick for the lift resevoir is located at the rear of the seat on the right side just in front of the big spring on the rear of the lift. The stick is under the big cap that is removed. This is also the fill plug for the hydraulic lift. The fill cap for the gear oil for the transmisson and the rearend is located just in front of the seat next to the gearshift.Oil capacity is 5 gallons of oil.The check plug is located on the rear housing on the side just to the left and above the pto shaft. With the check plug removed fill the resevoir until oil appears at the check plug.As i said it will take approx.5 gallons.reinstall the check plug. Good luck.

Thanks so much for the detailed instructions.

There is 2 pipe plugs (1/4") on the right side. One is more towards the rear and right in the casting the other is closer to the front and is in a cap that has 3 bolts holding it on. I am assuming that the one towards the front in the cap is the one I should use. Am I right?

The 10W-30 surprises me. Good thing I asked first cause I was going to buy Trans-Hydraulic fluid!

I have ordered a service manual and an operator's manual but they aren't here yet.

Thanks again

Yes, it is the square pipe plug in the cap with the 3 bolts holding it on, it is pictured in my manual.
As for the fluid, manual says: SAE 30 engine oil above 30 deg, and SAE 10 below 30 deg. so 10-30 would be good. Personally I use hydraulic oil, but I wanted something thinner for cold Northern MN temps. Some guys use engine oil, some use hyd oil, some use universal transmission oil. Do a search, it is always a big debate. Personal prefference i guess. I use 80-90W oil in transmission/rear end.
Your service manual and operators manual will be a big help when you get them. I have the I&T manual on paper. It is OK, but limited in detail sometimes. I wnated something better, but did not want to spend over $100 for a copy of the Oliver shop manual. I got mine on CD from ESPCOR.com. Oliver Master Shop Manual, Check it out, about $25. >Link
Good>Link Luck.

Thanks for the tip on the manuals. I spent the $100+ on the shop manual already but I may order the parts manual from those guys.

I know that oil is always a heated conversation. Thanks for cutting through it and helping me make my own decision. I think I'll try the 10W-30 as I'm in a cold cliamate as well so the SAE 30 would be too heavy.

Thanks again.

SW3 is correct the hydraulic oil or the 10w30 whichever you prefer. You can also flush both systems with diesel or kerosene.Just drain the old lube out and refill with the diesel or kerosene. On the lift just start the tractor and pump it back out like you did with the oil.And on the tranny and rearend drain the oil install the diesel and drive the tractor around the yard a couple of times then drain it out.Refill with the new oil.If you don't want to drive the tractor with the diesel installed ,just jack the rearwheels off the floor and run it in gear a few minutes. It won't hurt it and the diesel will wash the remaining contaminated oil out. Then use the diesel for parts cleaner or something.Goodluck.

I was thinking about the flush issue. I'll try that too.

right now I'm concentrating on the hydraulics to try and get them to work but in the spring I'll do the rearend oil.

Thanks

Well, the hydraulic fluid and the transmission fluid are separate. There is a hydraulic pan under the top cover which holds the hyd fluid. On the right side behind/under the seat is the dipstick for the hydraulic system. It is just a small metal cap with a short little dipstick attacked to it. If it is missing there could be water/ice in there.
The transmission does not have a dipstick, just a check plug. It is a small square pipe plug down near the pto shaft. Hope this helps.

OK,

Thanks guys I think I have enough info to give it a try.

Like I mentioned below, I think I might try pulling the filter out before I try the pumping thing as I'm afraid that things might not be working due to starving for oil. Then I'll clean the filter and pump out the oil then clean the filter again or replace it.

I guess I'll have to try and source a Hyd dipstick/cap.

I bet you Kent Gordon has a spare hyd. cap/dipstick. Call 903-729-8349. Breaks Super 55s and 550s all the time.

Does one of the plugs on the bottom of the transmission connect to that pan? I take it that the screw cap on the top of the transmission just behind the dash is the hydraulic fill hole?

I just stuck a small threaded rod into that hole under the seat and it was nothing but creamy foam so it definetly has water in there and needs to be drained and changed.

Does it just take hydraulic/treans oil? or something else?

Thanks

The plugs on he bottom of the tractor are for the transmission and final drive. So the answer is NO. It takes a 5 gallon pail of 80-90Gear oil. Your hydraulic oil needs to be pumped out. Does your tractor have a valve to run a remote cylinder? If so that is one of the first places to look for problems with the 3 point. Confused? J.

Confused? YEP!

No, I don't have a remote or any kind of remote valve (I think). I read something about a pipe plug but I didn't notice one that was obvious.

Do you have a picture or can I go take one that will help you discribe what I need to do?

Also what kind of hydraulic oil should I have on hand and how much?

First, if you are the guy that repeatedly asked us to buy your blade and supply you with weights and drawbar pins, and look at your photo ads, you need to answer the folks who go out of their way to help you.
I offered you weights, pins (on two different oliver forums) and was the first to reply to your photo ad (twice) and you have blanked me -even if only to say that you don't need me.

Now to answer your questions:
if you have (or had) a working front blade with hydraulics then you must have an external hydraulic valve (or a front-mounted pump is possible). Therefore you can pump out your hyd reservoir through that valve. You just pull the level up (by your right hip) as if you were raising the blade and it will pump it all out (-of the front valve plug if my memory serves me right). Have a big bucket ready!! It can be messy. Or you can leave the hoses in and collect it at the end of the hose that sends the oil to the blade...
I also made the mistake when I first got my 550 of thinking the trans reservoir and the trans filler were one and the same thing. IT IS NOT. In fact I kept adding oil to the tranny and wondering why the hyd. dipstick (back right, next to seat) was not showing any change! Soon figured it out, however and had to drain quite a bit out of tranny. So, to repeat, the hyd. reservoir fills from the same place as the dipstick (dipstick sits on top of cap). The tranny fills in the cap beneath the dash. The tranny level is to the square bolt in the rear, right mainframe.
I put the same hyd.trans fluid in both. Good luck.

third party image

My external valve looks like this. The forward running lines supply my loader (notice they are only one-way cylinders=one line for each side), the rear lines can be hooked up to a wood splitter etc. Looks like the REAR of the two valve plugs is the supply line, the front is the return line. Hope it makes sense now.
If you do not have this set up, then I guess your blade was run from a front-mounted pump.
If you have the valve, you will need to bleed the air out of the system after you refill.

Sorry to hear that you've had problems with somebody ignoring you, but it wasn't me. I don't have a front blade and have never asked for wheel weights.

Thanks for the picture.

I assume that the cone shaped thing with the hex end on it is the filter. From what I have read I'm guessing that it is a brass screen or something. I think I'll pull it and clean it before I try the pumping thing and then do it again after I empty it.

Oh, sorry about that. Must be the other new 550 guy on here right now.
Yes that is the hyd. filter housing. The filter needs cleaning yes, but it is a spring-loaded fiber thing. I soaked it in kerosene and swished it about a lot. My hydraulic system stopped because the tiniest piece of gasket in the back of the external valve had come loose.
So a good clean of the valve parts (very easy), filter, new fluid etc. and you may be off and running. But if you take the valve block off, those bolts need the correct torque when you put it back together for the valve to work properly. May as well put in new O rings in while you are there.
If you have to thread hoses/fittings etc. keep any plumbers tape a bit back from the end of the thread, so none of that tape gets into the system.

The plug in front of the seat is the fill hole for the TRANSMISSON AND REAREND.The fill hole for the HYDRAULIC LIFT RESEVOIR is behind the seat on the right hand side. The cap for the filler hole has the dipstick attacted on the bottom.Check the rubber boot around the gearshifter,if it is cracked thats a source of water leakage into the transmisson.
