Guys,

I am a "hobby farmer" as I"m too lazy to farm fulltime, and am looking for a "project tractor". I currently have a 1954 Allis D-17 I built out of a two tractor pile of parts, and it has been a good tractor for 8 years, but has some limitations. I rebuilt the D17 engine from the crank on up and it is fine from a horsepower perspective. The problem is the hydraulics, slow shifting and just generally being a clumsy machine.
Anyway, what do you guys think about an Oliver 1650 project tractor? From what I read, a rebuilt one would be a good machine for my needs; great design, better hydraulically, good hp, shift on the fly etc. I have no issue rebuilding from the ground up, although I"ve never rebuilt a Hydrapower drive. Is it like rebuilding an automatic transmission?
Looking forward to a fun project and will take all the advice I can get!

Here is a picture of what my 1650 project looks like at the current time. I'm working on setting the axle preload right now since this gal is getting new bearings all around.

The fun part will be working on the engine. I said the heck with the Waukesha and will be mating up a brand new Cummins 4BT. In the end, I will be saving around 1 gallon an hour in comparison to the original diesel plus I was able to buy a brand new Cummins for less than I could rebuild the Waukesha from the ground up. The challenge will be to make everything fit without turning it into too much of a cobble job :P

If the D17 seems "clumsy", I'm not too sure the 1650 would be an improvement for you. Its a bigger tractor, bigger turning radius, etc.- you may want to look closer at "utility" type tractors, such as the Masseys or thousand series Fords, Oliver 550, etc. They're a lot more nimble for bush-hogging, mowing, etc. If you do quite a bit of tillage and other heavy duty stuff, you're probably on the right track with the 1650 (which is generally considered to be the best of the 4 digit Olivers, I think).

The 1650 is a very good tractor and I like your idea on this. The tractors are very common, so good used parts are easy to find. If your tractor would require a Hydra-Power rebuild, maybe you should just look at a good used unit? Thats cheaper than rebuilding them....and typically those two speeds are bullet proof. My dad's 1650 still runs the original Hydra-Power after all these years and 15,000+ hours of use. Great tractors!

Yes the hydradrive is basically like an automatic transmission. Parts for it however will run your bill up drastically. My friend rebuilt his and it cost like $1500 to do it. Good luck though. Olivers are strong running tractors. Glad to see you chose the right color green.

Thanks!
I have emailed a tractor junkyard near Des Moines to see what they want for a junk 1650 or 1655 they have listed.
What's a fair price for a "junker" 1650 that may have no rubber, but essentially has all the drivetrain and sheetmetal?

depending on what all is there i would say from 500 to 1000 maybe more if the sheet metal and all motor components are there. if you are looking at just a bare tractor without motor and tires probably around that price. Don't quote me on that though thats just what i would pay.
