Well, I bought the 55 knowing it had some issues. I did a compresion check and all cylinders were @ 120 punds when I added squirted oil in th ecyminders. Once I got the tractor running my oil ressure is 20 pounds. Then I went a checked compression and all cylinders were @ 90 pounds. Then I proceeded to remove the oil pan and the rod bearings were slightly worn and had .010 bearings in it. Removed one main bearing and it look scratched. So I guess I will replace both the rod and main bearing. What else should I look for? Is 90 Pounds compression normal? Where do you guys buy bearing? As always we seem to be on a budjet.

I would appreciate your replys.

Thanks Dave

Hey, You guys are makeing me feel better. The serial number is 13 889-518 and the old filter holder is cast. Do you think I should just put the back on and leave it as is. It seem to run good. I should have mentioned that I did not have any vacuum, and the intake manifold leaked so I had the manifold planned and now it started right up but I thought 20 pounds was trouble.

Dave,as i said 20lbs is great on that engine. Most of them did not have that when new.If the tractor runs good and makes good power you will be fine. Also a quote from the sevice manual"recommended operating pressure is 15 psi at a crankshaft speed of 1600 rpm".High speed rpm is curtailed at 2200 on that engine so i'd say 20psi is great.

Dave,20 lbs oil pressure is fabulous for that engine.15 to 18 lbs is considerd normal.Oil pressure is affected on some of those by a disc located inside the filter base.On the alumium bases sometimes this disc was lost resulting in low oil pressure reading's.The best remedy for this was replacement with a cast filter base. Also if you tractor has 90lbs compression uniform accross all four cylinders it should run fine.Unless it is burning oil or fouling plugs i would run it a little longer. However a look at the valves might be in order.

Before you get all exicted and worried 20 psi oil pressure is fine. Also worn rod bearings do not affect oil pressure on that engine/ You did not say how late a Super 55 you have so I don't know which of the 2 atyles of bearings you have. Get some plastigauge and check your clearances. What oil filter base do you have, cast iron or aluminum? Remember the restrictor disk does affect oil pressure. How good is your compression tester? Good cranking speed while making the test? All the plugs out? Throttle wide open? Start there: A leakdown test is better than a compression test in my opinon. Do you have a vacuum gauge? Have you made a test. More questions? J.
